Another bounce around
In the last couple of weeks I have experimented with two immutable installations of Linux. Both were Fedora based immutables of Fedora Silverblue and Fedora Kinoite. While cli based update management is the same across both the Gnome and KDE based options. Their was a surprising difference between Gnome and KDE.
I really like Gnome. I like the Gnome app ecosystem. I generally get on with the Gnome workflow, finding myself easily moving between applications and desktops with ease. So it was a bit of surprise to run into KDE 6.7 and the high degree of polish I found.
From the intital welcome screen with account setup and configuration, to the superior font rendering; KDE rather 'pops' for the user upon login. My usual complaint is problems I have with some of the KDE apps, namely Tokodon. I so really want to use it but the random crashes can be frustrating. While I have reported bugs many times, I'm still getting these today with the app and am starting to wonder if my Mastodon server is the culprit.
I've found how to configure KDE to allow me to do those quick changes that I like so much about Gnome. Additionally, I have found that KDE is snappier on this hardware than Gnome is. That can mean little in day to day use but it's a nice perk when the user behind the keyboard has a bad attitude.
